The Ring of Fire Aquarium was designed by Peter Chermayeff from Cambridge Seven Architects in Boston. The Aquarium features exhibits representing all of the countries of the Pacific Rim.
We designed, created and installed thirty-two individual multi-channel soundscape areas. The soundscapes are heard throughout the building.
The project used the Magian DiAC System for the delivery, management and control of the rich soundscapes. At that time Magian's scope included proprietary audio hardware manufactured by Magian. Magian no longer manufactures this hardware as all of the audio delivery and control functionality is now incorporated into a software version of the DiAC System. The DiAC System now operates within a standard IT infrastructure.
Magian also worked with Peace River Films from Boston on the design and production for the video exhibits.
Les Gilbert travelled to Japan, Alaska, California, Costa Rica, Chile, New Zealand and Australia to make digital field recordings for the project.
