Four years on from the opening of MIDE (Museo Interactivo de Economía) in Mexico City, the museum developed a major new exhibition installed in refurbished roof-top galleries at this exceptional institution.
The MIDE Sustainable Development exhibition, which opened in 2011, tackles the complex issue of climate change from the perspective of economics and society as well as that of the environment.
Magian worked with museum content developers to design a range of interactive, dual-language, multimedia from fairly traditional touchscreens through to multi-touch tables, donor touchscreen programs, video recording stations, interactive games for individual users, social media engagement, to a compelling theatre experience known as the Climate Change Forum. Groups of about thirty visitors, supported by a staff facilitator, represent eight separate nations all trying to make decisions about mitigation or adaptation to the global effects of climate change. Magian designed the Forum software and functionality based on algorithms supplied by the University of Mexico which also provided other technical and intellectual support to MIDE.
An innovative feature of the Desarrollo Sustentable exhibition is the provision for visitors to post the results of interactions and their thoughts and impressions of the exhibition to Facebook and Twitter or to email information to themselves. Visitors are also able to make video recordings in order to commit to personal behaviour changes in relation to climate change. These video recordings can also be posted to social media or sent home by email directly from the touchscreen program. Magian also developed video programs displaying exquisite imagery of the natural world interspersed with emotive texts in Spanish and English.
The Desarrollo Sustentable (Sustainable Development) exhibit is networked to allow for site management, diagnostics and gathering of visitor usage statistics. Ninety percent of the media also operates within the Magian MMaPS database content management system allowing for updateability of exhibit media content.
