National Maritime Museum
Hobson Wharf

The New Zealand Maritime Museum is located at Hobson Wharf, a pier in Auckland’s harbour.

The Museum embodies much that is the key to the nature of this small island nation - tracing the earliest arrivals of voyaging Polynesians through to the stories of European immigration and contemporary maritime activity.

From the rich history of coastal shipping, to contemporary recreational activities such as yachting and beach activities from life-saving to surfing and fishing, the Museum is a varied mix of contextual, re-created environments and interactive maritime displays.

Magian designed, created and installed:

  • soundscapes for all exhibits
  • oral history programs
  • video programs
  • two multi-screen audio visual theatre productions

The project uses the Magian DiAC System for the delivery of all audio in the Museum.

Before founding Magian Design Studio, Gillian Chaplin was the Director of Public Programs at the Museum.  She served on the team who established, designed and built Hobson Wharf, which opened in 1992.
