Melbourne Zoo’s new Orang-utan Sanctuary exhibit opened in November 2006. Magian was responsible for the design and development of two touchscreen programs.
The Sanctuary features interactive games, sculpture, multimedia and breathtaking imagery that bring visitors face to face with these very intelligent and individual animals.
One of the objectives of the exhibit is for visitors to be inspired by stories about those helping to save and conserve these highly endangered animals. Visitors also learn how they can make a difference.
Magian created two interactive touchscreens for the Orang-utan Sanctuary – Make a Difference and Find Out More. Both programs have a strong environmental and conservation focus, drawing attention to the threats faced by orang-utans, and what is currently being done to help save them.
Magian designed the interface to reflect the thematic approach of the exhibit.
Magian provided for an on-screen email facility that enables visitors to input their email address. This triggers an automatically generated email, containing a link to Zoos Victoria’s Conservation website, to be sent home via email.
One of the challenges inherent in producing exhibits communicating conservation messages is the need to regularly and easily update the content in the exhibits to reflect and address ever-changing current and topical issues. The Zoo can update, manage and modify all of the media exhibit content using the Magian MMaP System.
The System allows Zoo staff to make changes in response to new research or zoological finds. MMaPS also allows the Museum to be responsive to evaluation reports relating to the media programs.
