Canberra's Museum of Australian Democracy (formerly Old Parliament House) was home to Australia's Federal Parliament from 1927 to 1988 and is now a nationally listed heritage building.
As part of a major redevelopment, the Museum of Australian Democracy selected Magian Design Studio to create and install two audio-visual exhibits; one into its heritage Cabinet Room and another in a new space for Year 9 and10 Students in the South West Wing.
'Cabinet in Confidence'
Visitors to the Museum of Australian Democracy can get a taste of what it was like to be in the shoes of Cabinet Ministers during tough decision-making times over the decades. On a cruciform screen set up appears magically from the ceiling of this important heritage space, visitors watch one of four stories, each covering a time when Australia's Cabinet had to make a decision.
Magian created an experience that respected the history and heritage of the Cabinet Room, while offering visitors a dramatic and immersive experience. Using show control operated by an iPod Touch and strategically mounted projectors, the 'Cabinet in Confidence' has helped the Museum of Australian Democracy retain history with an engaging 21st Century concept.
'Decision 360°'
The Museum of Australian Democracy wanted an experience to engage visiting Year 9 and 10 students that was stimulating for a tech-savvy youthful audience and also successfully reinforced curriculum messages.
Magian devised and implemented the concept of a 'black box' room that played a story projected onto all four walls using 14 projectors. Magian's video production and graphics team liaised with footage libraries and archives all over Australia to collect the best media to tell the stories of 'Conscription', 'Immigration' and 'Environment'. Magian's software development team created programs that allowed students to interact with the program during the experience using an iPod Touch.
