In 1991, Les Gilbert’s Sound Design Studio was commissioned by the Historic Houses Trust of New South Wales to create and install a unique soundscape for the Third Floor Galleries of Hyde Park Barracks. The soundscape was designed and created by Les Gilbert based on texts written by historian Paul Carter.

The soundscape was installed using Sound Design Studio DiAC (Digital Interactivity and Control) hardware.

In 2003 Magian Design Studio was commissioned to restore the soundscape and upgrade the hardware.

Magian undertook to:

  • re-engineer and digitally re-master the audio tracks for the soundscape
  • re-program the 16 channel soundscape
  • incorporate new sensors and audio equipment
  • incorporate functionality to allow docents to interrupt the soundscapes for the purpose of enriching their guided tours

The soundscape was re-installed using the current Magian Design Studio DiAC software System.  The interpretation and content was not changed at that time.  On the diagram the blue icons indicate sensors. The speakers are red.  In both cases these are mounted below the eaves on the tops of the dividing walls.
