Warlpiri Community
Yanardilyi - Cockatoo Creek

This CD-ROM project was an initiative of the Warlpiri Aboriginal community at Yuendumu, a town situated on

the edge of the Tanami Desert in Central Australia.  Yanardilyi (Cockatoo Creek) is an area of land 25km north-west of Yuendumu. The South Australian Museum commissioned a large painting from the community. The result is a magnificent canvas painted by the Warlukurlangu artists at Yuendumu as a community project.

The painting measures 3m x 4m and is now hanging at the South Australian Museum. A contemporary dot painting, it depicts four Dreaming stories from the Yanardilyi area. The program content included the story of the making of the Yanardilyi canvas in all its complexity as well as a comprehensive section describing aspects of the community's life in Australia's Central desert. Also included is a gallery of the other work produced by the Warlpiri artists.

Magian worked closely with the Walpiri community as a significant and integral part of the project designing and producing the CD-ROM. Magian later incorporated the program content into an exhibition of Australian Aboriginal Art at The National Geographic Society Explorers Hall in Washington DC.

The American Association of Museums awarded the Yanardilyi program a Silver MUSE Award in 2002.

The New York Festivals awarded the Yanardilyi program a Bronze World Medal in 2002.
