California Science Center
World of Ecology

Magian was responsible for designing and producing soundscapes for all galleries in the World of Ecology exhibit at the California Science Center in Los
Angeles.

Magian also designed, developed and produced the technical infrastructure and software to operate a  flash flood and storm and flash flood in the Desert Gallery.  The flash flood system designed by Magian is programmed to coordinate sound, lighting and water pumps. The system also monitors the water level in the tanks and synchronizes to scheduled times for this dramatic event.

Magian was also responsible for designing, developing and producing a complex diver control system that allows education staff to control presentations to visitors in front of major aquarium exhibits - notably the large Reef Tank exhibit. The diver control system creates connections between -  educators in front of the tanks, two divers within the tank and a diver tender situated above the tank.

Educators are able to personally adjust the EQ of their voice delivery, adjust volume levels, switch between divers and the tender and well as manage and direct visitor questions and comments to the divers.  The system also allows for complex safety systems and emergency procedures in case of accidents.

Scope of multimedia services Magian provided:

  • project planning
  • technical design development of soundscapes
  • creative production of soundscapes
  • technical infrastructure & integrated system design
  • technical & hardware specification
  • software design and development
  • system commissioning
  • remote post-installation system support

Media program types produced by Magian:

  • audio and multi-channel soundscape production
  • complex diver control system
  • flash flood system coordinating lighting, pumps and audio

The Magian DiAC System is used to manage and control the dynamic randomized soundscapes as well as the flash flood program and the diver control system.
